According to Spinazzola,
“On either side of entrance IX.12.4 there were two workshops with large doorways but there was no clue as to the industry carried out in these shops.
The one at IX.12.3 was more modest than IX.12.5, and led into the atrium of IX.12.4, and with very narrow stairway against the left (west) wall, for the exclusive use of the atrium to the upper floor: the other one at IX.12.5 was over 5 metres wide with a rear room, and completely detached from the rest of the house without any communication or doorway.”

According to Spinazzola, this painting showing a house with two-storey porticoes and windows, was the decoration of a zoccolo in a room on the upper floor.
